At Lion in the Sun we use three distinct fabrics to make our swimwear. All these fabrics have been tested for sun protection in both in the country of origin (Australia, UK or Itlay) and in UK laboratories, and all meet the requirements to carry the UPF50+ rating. This is the highest sun protective rating awarded to fabric.
For the babies UV sunsuits and sun hats, we use a very soft polycotton with lycra. This fabric is breathable and gentle, with the shape retention you would expect from swimwear. It is not a fast drying fabric, but we assume that a baby will be wearing a swim nappy and will need changing after a soaking. Because of the cotton base to this fabric, it is very comfortable to wear in the heat, for example if a baby is sleeping in the shade.
For the the UV swimsuits, rash shirts (swim shirts), etc for older children who are running around and constantly in and out of the water we strongly recommend our very fast drying nylon/lycra mix. This modern fabric is designed for swimwear and we think it is the best fabric on the market for these garments: it retains far less moisture than a cotton garment and is light in the water, and because it dries so quickly your children really can wear it all day, no matter how many times they're in and out of the water. We have tried all sorts of fabrics on our three children over the years and we all agree this matt finished, Italian fabric is the best by far.
The woven fabric (for the girls' board shorts and boys' board shorts) is a tight, light weave, also with factor 50+ and a quick drying finish.
Colours match across the range so you can mix and match your look. With the Eden print you can wear both the Denim and the Dafne colours, the three colours in the Nerine print match the Rose colours, Dafne and Magenta. Wear the Turquoise and Verde with the Blue, and the Denim Tattoo with the Denim. Graffiti and Red are a good match.
