Those of us who were children in the 70s and 80s may have grown up with the idea of sunburn being normal and sun tan being a sign of good health. Unfortunately, as adults we may now suffering as a result of that cultural norm. There has been plenty of research in recent years on the damaging effect of the sun on exposed skin and we now know much more about UV radiation. We now understand that sunburn is a sign of sun damage and that sun tans are not healthy, despite the efforts of advertisers to tell us otherwise.

Suntans appear after the sun's rays have already killed some cells and damaged others. UV rays can cause skin damage through cloud cover, in any temperature and during any season. Bright sun can also cause eye problems, wrinkles, skin spots, and skin cancer.

To help protect your family from the dangers of the sun :

* Stay out of the sun between 10 am and 4 pm when the sun's rays are strongest
* Use sun cream with an SPF of 15 or higher
* Wear sun protective clothing
* Wear sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV ray protection, with good cover
* Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps

Check your skin regularly, and keep close watch on moles and blemishes. Check skin for changes in the size, shape, color or feel of birthmarks, moles and spots. Such changes may be a sign of skin cancer.
